SELF-DISCOVERY

Ava DuVernay's I Will Follow showcases grief in the same vein as You Were Just Here. The road to accepting the "new normal" after losing a loved one is a bumpy, bittersweet journey. Receiving help and comfort from those who care about us is a powerful testament to the concept of moving on but never forgetting those we've lost.

The natural beauty of traveling by train and developing a bond with a stranger is the look and feel for You Were Just Here. I want people to watch this and forget it's a movie. The natural dialogue and self discovery that results is a journey I want the audience to feel they're also part of.

SIMILAR IN THEME/GENRE: FAMILY DRAMA, FATHER/DAUGHTER, LOSS/GRIEF

The Descendants showcases complicated family connections, often not seen by others or even those in the family itself. In You Were Just Here, Vanessa learns things about her father that has forever changed the way she knew him, causing her to question the bond they had.

SIMILAR THEME: FATHER/DAUGHTER, SELF-DISCOVERY

SIMILAR BUDGET

The father/daughter relationship showcased in Hearts Beat Loud is very reminiscent of the playfulness the audience gets a glimpse of in You Were Just Here. Growing and exploring together is something Vanessa didn't get a chance to indulge in with Sam as much as she would have liked but we see in their brief flashbacks together the strength of their bond, even if it occasionally involves a bit of eye rolling and awkward moments.

SIMILAR THEME/GENRE: FAMILY DRAMA, FATHER/DAUGHTER/SELF-DISCOVERY

The human condition showcased by a daughter's memories of time spent with her father in flashbacks captured in old footage in the movie Aftersun paints a hauntingly beautiful portrait of the challenges of trying to understand a parent, while discovering oneself in the process. Vanessa struggles with her recollections and versions of Sam, much in the same way Sophie does with her father. But unlike Aftersun, Vanessa's memories of her father are very much rooted in reality, albeit a startling and unexpected one.
